Free99 is a research, design, and development practice of Munus Shih and Nikki (Niktari) Makagiansar. As designers, technologists, and educators, they’re particularly interested in how open-source values and code-based workflows can cultivate new ways of making, teaching, and learning—together. The meaning of their name is twofold and is reflective of their commitment to open-source values as a studio practice. A playful critique of retail culture, “free99” is a colloquial expression for something obtained at no cost, which speaks to their fundamental belief that the collection of data and resources should not only be decentralized but also distributed amongst communities. The “free” in their name also connotes freedom—the liberty to use, expand, modify, and improve existing resources without restriction. They believe any project, material, or tool becomes more rich and well-rounded when more people engage with and contribute to it.
