Spencer Chang
Spencer Chang is an artist, engineer, and toy maker interested in the play, creation, and care that emerges from our relationships with and through technology.
Their practice—spanning internet environments, interactive sculpture, and creative infrastructure—reconstructs technology from a tool of institutional oppression into a medium for communal flourishing. These works act as "interventions" that leverage whimsical intimacy to interrogate our systems, invite active imagination to reinvent them, and finally, equip us with the means to do so. Always attempting to connect art to everyday life, their work sits at the tension between art and design, emotion and function, and individual actualization and communal agency.
Their work has been featured in and supported by the de Young Museum, Gray Area, CultureHub, MIT Technology Review, Its Nice That, & Frieze, among others. They are a NEW INC Y11 member and have lead workshops for institutions such as SFPC, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
